God’s Promise to Israel
Is the Jewish people’s return to the Land of Israel the fulfillment of God’s promise to the Chosen People?
Many will quote prophecies from the Bible, and they certainly have a point. There are indeed many verses that speak of a return of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.
However, perhaps of all of the prophecies, the ones that are the most convincing are the ones that refer to the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
Jerusalem until the 20th century
There were very few Jews, Christians, or Arabs who lived anywhere in the Land of Israel in 1900. However the ancient city of Jerusalem had thousands of Jews living in it’s walls. There were a few scattered neighborhoods outside of the walls, but still there were just thousands of Jews who lived outside of Jerusalem. However, in the early 20th century, before the State of Israel was founded, a significant return to the Land of Israel began.
Jerusalem in the early 20th century
During the British Mandate period, tens of thousands of Jews moved into the Land of Israel. Many of them settled in the new neighborhoods of Jerusalem, and the Jewish population became the large majority in the city. However, the city was still a small city that had expanded beyond it’s walls. It was not a modern city, but an ancient city with a new section. The land of Israel was largely built up through kibbutzim and moshavim (communal villages.)
Jerusalem in the 2nd half of the 20th century
Once the State of Israel was established in 1948, 70 years ago, a massive influx of Jews came into the Land of Israel. A large segment of the new returnees chose to settle in Jerusalem. But the city was still small until the Six Day War. In that miraculous war, Israel liberated the entire city of Jerusalem. From then on, Israel built, built, and built more.
Today, 70 years after the State of Israel was founded, the city of Jerusalem has more than 1 million residents. And it is getting bigger every day.
This is truly a fulfillment of the prophecies.
