This appears to be an amazing story of a palm tree seed that came to life after 2000 years. But if you only see the story of a palm tree, you’ve missed the point. The story of the palm tree is so striking because it is the story of the Jewish People. A people hibernating in the exiles for thousands of years, waiting and dreaming to come home.
The incredulousness of Dr. Elaine Solowey, head of the Center for Sustainable Agriculture in the Arava Institute, when she first saw signs of life from the ancient seed found at the top of Masada, represents the awe and wonder of the world as the Jewish Nation came to life after 2000 years of suffering and persecution. The nation who had lived atop Masada 2000 years ago began to show life, to grow and to flourish, just as the prophet Ezekiel prophesied thousands of years ago:
“Thus says the Lord God unto these bones: Behold, I will breath spirit into you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will put flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”
