British Major General Orde Wingate’s Night Operation Squads that he organized in Israel in the late 1930′s are recognized as one of the most critical aspects of the building up of the Haganah and ultimately the Army of the State of Israel. Wingate became known to the Jewish men he commanded as “The Friend.”
