The mere mention of the words “Gush Etzion” conjures up powerful memories amongst all Israelis who know good and well about the heartbreaking story of the fall of the Gush just one day before the establishment of the State of Israel.
It was known as the most tragic story in the midst of Israel’s victorious War of Independence.
Most of the men from Gush Etzion were killed by Arab marauders, but the children with their mothers and a few fathers began a new life – with a dream of returning one day to Gush Etzion.
19 years later in 1967, the dreams became a reality and the Jewish people returned to the hills of Judea and built up beautiful communities.
Today, tens of thousands of Jews live in large and beautiful settlements and cities that cover a wide expanse of the Judean Hills just south of Jerusalem.
