Dementia can affect anyone. It describes a wide range of brain diseases connected with a decline in memory or other thinking skills. These are severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. For example, going for a drive. Even going on a walk to the local grocery story can be a challenge. It can also have other common symptoms such as emotional problems and problems with language.
Common types of dementia include Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, and Lewy body dementia. Some known causes include hypothyroidism, vitamin B12 deficiency, Lyme disease, and neurosyphillis. It is important to get a diagnosis early on and start treatment early on so as to allow time to plan for the future. Any person with a diagnosis needs to know that there are many challenges that they will face. They may have problems with short term memory and ability to focus. Even if the person has a caregiver to assist, even simple daily tasks can often be a huge mountain to climb.
One of the biggest challenges for people with dementia is that of wandering. They may get lost, or fall and suffer
a severe injury. Adam, a young man with a passion for technology, has used his skills to help the field of
medicine. After speaking with his father, a medical doctor, he realized that people with dementia can suffer
devastating effects by wandering and suffering injury or getting lost. Inspired to do something, Adam used his tech
knowledge to invent a way to locate dementia patients who wander.
The locator bracelet
He designed and developed a locator bracelet. When used, it can pinpoint the location of the person wearing it. So, for example, if a person with severe memory loss wears it and goes for a walk, and then gets lost, the locator bracelet can find him. This is simple and not too expensive. However, there may be costs – such as, dedicated staff working on the project. Nonetheless, this amazing device will serve as a big boost to the advancement of caring for people with dementia.
