The tragedy of destroying the community of Amona

Against all logic, the Israeli government evacuated the Jewish community of Amona in February 2017.

The claim, made by left-wing organizations and upheld by Israel’s supreme court, was that the community was an illegal outpost built on private Palestinian land.

According to Ynet, the evacuation was marked by “violence and arrests, which left more than 60 officers wounded. Activists used pepper spray, threw rocks, fire extinguishers and wooden planks at the policemen, prompting them to respond with fire hoses.”

Bayit Yehudi Chairman and Education Minister Naftali Bennett said in remarks at the time that the evacuation of the Amona outpost will eventually lead to the application of Israeli sovereignty in the whole of the “West Bank.”

“From the ruins of Amona we will build a new settlement,” he said. “From its ruins we will erect kindergartens all over Judea and Samaria. From the defeat in the court we will establish a new legal regime that will regulate all of the settlements, and from this defeat we will start applying the sovereignty of the State of Israel all over Judea and Samaria.”

The 42 evacuated families have yet to be relocated.
